Sturgeon, Cardinals Swing into Spring Season at Gulf Coast Classic

Chasing the school records for both single season and career stroke average and supported by a talented trio of freshmen, University of Louisville senior golfer Grant Sturgeon leads the Cardinals into their first event of the spring season at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic on February 11-12.
A native of Cave City, Ky., Sturgeon led the squad with a 72.00 stroke average and two Top 10 finishes while competing in all five events during the fall season. Sturgeon, who currently holds the school record with a 74.48 career stroke average, is on pace to shatter the single season record of 73.69 held by Chris Campbell if he maintains the form he displayed during the fall season.
Supporting Sturgeon is the freshman trio of Mark Anderson, Brett Jones and Charlie Woo, who posted a collective 73.79 stroke average during the fall season to rank fourth nationally in the Golfstat Freshman Class Impact Rankings.
Anderson, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., participated in all five fall events and ranked third on the squad with a 73.29 stroke average. Jones, a native of Paducah, and the 2001 Mr. Golf for the state of Kentucky, ranked second on the squad with a 73.07 stroke average. Woo, who hails from Toronto, Ontario, ranked fourth on the team with a 75.00 stroke average.
Senior Dean Halterman, who did not see action during the fall campaign, rounds of the Cardinal lineup for the event hosted by Conference USA member Southern Miss. The 54-hole event at Windance Country Club in Gulfport, Miss. begins with two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
