LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Reece Gaines scored a career-high 30 points and Louisville sank a school-record 19 3-pointers in a 96-77 win over South Florida on Friday night.
Bryant Northern added a career-high 21 points as the Cardinals (13-7, 4-5 Conference USA) went 19-of-32 from 3-point range (59 percent) and won for the 12th time in 13 home games. The 19 3-pointers were also a record for a Conference USA game.
Gaines went 7-of-12 and Northern went 7-of-9 from 3-point range, both career highs for 3-point baskets for Louisville, the third-worst 3-point shooting team in Conference USA (31 percent) coming into the game.
Altron Jackson scored 25 to lead South Florida (14-7, 4-4), which committed 22 turnovers that led to 28 Louisville points.
The Bulls trailed 39-29 at halftime, finishing the half with 16 turnovers and 11 field goals.
South Florida mounted a 10-0 run early in the second half to trim the deficit to 43-39.
Northern sank a pair of 3-pointers in a 30-second span during an answering 8-2 Louisville run.
South Florida switched to a 2-3 zone defense midway through the second half, and went on a 13-6 run, cutting Louisville's lead to 63-60.
Northern hit Louisville's season-high 14th 3-pointer of the game with 7:20 left in the game to restore a six-point lead. He added his sixth 3-pointer of the game 30 seconds later.
The Bulls pulled to within six, but Gaines hit a 3-pointer from the wing with 4:05 remaining, and was fouled by Greg Brittian. He made the ensuing free throw to restore Louisville's double-digit lead.
The Bulls got no closer than nine in the final minutes, as the Cardinals continued to shred South Florida's zone defense with 3-point baskets.
Gaines' final 3 put Louisville up 84-71 with 2:24 left, and Northern sank his last one with 43.9 seconds to go.
Louisville's win was the program's 1,400th all-time.
