
Field Hockey Tops Central Michigan 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference opponent Central Michigan 3-1 Friday at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals move to 8-3 on the season and are 3-0 in conference play for the first time in program history. Central Michigan falls to 7-4 (1-1).
The Cards got on the scoreboard just five minutes into the game when Olivia Netzler deflected a shot by Kim Hughes on a penalty corner to give U of L a 1-0 lead.
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into the second half when Suzanne Irwin pushed a feed from Jen Kastelic past Central Michigan goalkeeper Janel Spero to increase the lead to 2-0 at the 48:16 mark in the game.
Kastelic added an insurance goal for the Cardinals two minutes later when she connected on a pass from Danielle Barr on another Louisville penalty corner to make it a 3-0 game.
Central Michigan's Maria Neiswender scored with assists from Allison Foland and Jocelyn Gates at the 65:10 mark to put the Chippewas on the scoreboard with less than five minutes left in the game.
The Cardinals outshot CMU 14-6 and held an 8-3 penalty corner advantage. Louisville goalkeeper Janina Perna posted five saves in the game to earn the win. Central Michigan's Spero had eight stops in the game.
The Cards will continue MAC play Saturday when they face Ball State at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
