MUNCIE, Ind. - The ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team was shut out for the first time this season when the Cards fell to Ball State 3-0 Saturday in a Mid-American Conference contest in Muncie, Ind.
Ball State got on the scoreboard when Heather Weinhold's driving shot on a penalty corner from the top of the key deflected off of Jen Strodel's stick and over the shoulder of Louisville goalkeeper Christy Hershey 9:26 into the contest. Weinhold put BSU on top 2-0 with her converted penalty stroke seven and one-half minutes later. Ball State's final goal came 10:30 into the second half when Afton Hess found Monika Rhode's stick for a one-timer, which slipped past Hershey and gave BSU the 3-0 margin of victory.
Ball State posted a 14-4 advantage in shots, but the teams were even - 5-5 - in corners. Hershey finished the game with six saves. BSU goalkeeper Susan McDowell had three stops in the shutout. Ball State improves to 9-7 on the season and is now 5-3 in MAC play after completing a two-game regular season sweep of Louisville.
Louisville (12-7, 6-3) will close out the regular season when it hosts MAC opponent Miami on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Trager Stadium at 2:00 p.m. The Cards will honor their six seniors at the game.
