
Volleyball Sweeps Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY -- Bing Sun had 20 kills, an ace and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-21, 30-10, 30-21 win over intrastate rival Kentucky.
Louisville improves its record to 14-3 and the fifth straight win over UK. UK 7-10 and has lost 15 of the last 16 meetings between the rivals. However, UK still has the series edge at 21-20.
The Cardinals hit a season-high .456 in the match, edged UK 7-6 in blocking and recorded six aces.
"We were hitting so well," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "This is always an emotional and competitive match and everyone steps up."
The Cardinals used a 13-5 run in the middle of game one to build a solid lead over the Wildcats. The Louisville offense was evenly spread with three players getting five kills apiece with Stacey Mercer hitting a perfect five for five with no errors. Freshman Lena Ustymenko and Bing Sun joined her with fice kills. U of L outhit the Cats .342 to .161. The Cardinals were outblocked 2-0 but had three service aces -- two by Ustymenko.
In the second game, U of L powered out to a 20-7 lead and never looked back. The Cardinals hit a season game-high .722 with 14 kills on 18 swings and only one error. The Cardinal block came alive with five led by Flynn's four block assists.
"We will have to go back a ways to find a single game where we hit that well," said Yelin.
In the final game, UK overcame an 8-2 deficit but pu8lled to within three at 14-11 when Jennifer Craven was called for being in the net. However, U of L reeled off a 7-2 run and the Cats could not overcome.
The Cats were led by Sissy Canfields eight kills and four blocks. Aleisha Craven, Jennifer Craven's first cousin had a team-high seven digs at Libero for the Cats. Jennifer recorded 41 assists.
