Junior defensive end Dewayne White, the reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, was named the league's defensive player of the week for the first time this season after helping the University of Louisville football team defeat conference rival Memphis, 38-32, in front of a national audience on Tuesday.
The nation's active leader for sacks (32.5) and tackles for loss (47.5), White had a dominant performance against the Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, the site of last season's victory over BYU in the AXA Liberty Bowl. The junior pass rusher logged nine tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss, while also chipping in with a pass breakup, a blocked extra point attempt and a fumble recovery.
With two more sacks, White passed former teammate Michael Josiah for the U of L career record and now needs only three more quarterback takedowns to tie UAB's Bryan Thomas for the C-USA career mark.
