The University of Louisville softball team has been picked to finish fourth in Conference USA by the league's nine head softball coaches. Defending regular season champion DePaul has been selected to win the 2002 C-USA Softball Championship, followed by Southern Mississippi and South Florida. U of L juniors Keola Calderon and Melissa Jacobo were named to the preseason all-league team.
Jacobo, an infielder from Whittier, Calif., was second in the conference with a .366 batting average and led the league with 20 doubles. She was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region first team in 2001 and has been an all-conference selection for the past two years. Calderon, an outfielder from Orcutt, Calif., led the conference with 50 RBI and was second on the team with a .345 batting average. She has also been an all-league selection since her freshman season and was named to the NFCA All-South second team in 2000.
Last year, U of L finished their second season of play with a 40-26 record (12-9 C-USA) and a fourth place regular season finish. The Cardinals open up the 2002 season at Florida State's Seminole Challenge Tournament, Feb. 8-10 in Tallahassee, Fla., where they will face No. 9 Washington, No. 15 Florida State, No. 22 South Carolina and Florida Atlantic.
