Associated Press - Indiana University quarterback Antwaan Randle El and University of Louisville wide receiver Zek Parker came up short in the 77th annual Shrine All-Star Game.
They helped the East drive inside the 20 as time ran out in the West's 21-13 victory yesterday in San Francisco.
Randle El completed 10 of 21 passes for 119 yards, but he also threw two interceptions and lost 12 yards on eight carries. Parker caught six passes for 110 yards.
San Jose State's Deonce Whitaker, hindered by injuries most of the regular season, scored two touchdowns, including the game-clincher in the fourth quarter.
Whitaker, selected the offensive MVP, ran for 40 yards and caught three passes for another 40 yards at sparsely populated Pac Bell Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.
Whitaker's 2-yard run with 6:09 remaining clinched the victory.
Texas linebacker Everick Rawls was selected the defensive MVP.
Stanford's Randy Fasani replaced Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington, who left the game with a strained ligament in his knee, midway through the first quarter and drove the West to its first touchdown. Whitaker went the final yard of a 50-yard drive for the score.
''Hopefully, it's nothing serious,'' West coach Mike Bellotti said of Harrington, whom he coached at Oregon. ''He's walking, but it's sore. It will probably be a couple of weeks.''
Fasani, who played the rest of the first half, completed 12 of 16 passes for 87 yards.
Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler made the most of his second-quarter appearance, completing 3 of 4 passes for 102 yards, including a 3-yard scoring toss to Army's Clint Dodson.
Dantzler, who led Clemson to a Humanitarian Bowl victory over Louisiana Tech, completed passes of 51 yards to Iowa's Kahlil Hill and 48 yards to Parker.
Illinois quarterback Kurt Kittner was 7 of 19 for 95 yards for the East.
