Cavender Finishes Fourth in Cross Country Season-Opener

VERSAILLES, Ky. - Senior Alicia Cavender finished fourth overall to lead the University of Louisville women at the Woodford Cross Country Trials in the Cardinals' season-opening meet Friday evening. Both the U of L men and women placed third in the tri-team meet. Kentucky captured the men's team title, while Eastern Kentucky and UK tied for first in the women's race.
Cavender ran the 2-mile course in 12:11.70 for her fourth-place finish, while junior Marea Ingwersen placed sixth with a time of 12:34.00. Freshman Heather Griffith came in 11th, missing a top-10 finish by less than one second in her collegiate debut. UK's Caity Phillips won the event in 11:36.30.
On the men's side, junior Mike Horan led the Cardinals with a time of 17:19.30 to finish 14th. Juniors Tim Franxman (17:21.30) and Joshua Gentry (17:25.20) placed 15th and 16th, respectively, to round out the Cards' top three finishers. Kentucky's Hunter Spencer won the 5000m race in 16:00.00.
The Cardinals return to action next Saturday when they travel to Oxford, Ohio, for the Miami University Invitational.
