LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head women's rowing coach Richard Ruggieri announced today that four student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and row for the Cardinals this fall.
Lucy Svehla, who comes from Langley, British Columbia, has produced strong results on the rowing machine and in the single scull for the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club. She is coached by Dick McClure, who has produced numerous Canadian Olympians in the past 20 years. Prior to taking up the sport of rowing, Svehla was a highly competitive tennis player in Canada.
Brooke and Ashley Spence, twin sisters from North Vancouver, British Columbia, have competed for the Deep Cove Rowing Centre the past three years. Their coach, Stephen Stamp, has worked with the Spence's from the beginning and is a Level IV coach for Rowing Canada. They are both technically sound rowers who specialize in the smaller boats and are extremely competitive when teaming together in the pair and double.
Holly Tomkins, who currently lives in Edgewood, Ky., but grew up in Canada, is new to the sport of rowing but not to a sport that requires outstanding physical fitness. As a triathlete, she was ranked 19th in the World last year among females ages 16-19. The Villa Modonna Academy graduate placed 21st at the 2001 World Indoor Rowing Championships in the Women's Junior-18 Lightweight Division. With a summer of rowing and training a great deal of improvement will be seen.
Louisville will begin its third year of intercollegiate competition this fall.
