PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team wrapped up its second season of intercollegiate competition and its first at the varsity level with solid performances at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday in Philadelphia.
For the first time in school history, the Cardinals entered a pair race and finished strong. The duo of sophomores Blaire Steinert and Kate O'Bryan won the semifinal race on Friday before finishing sixth overall in the Grand Final Saturday.
The Cardinals' Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ crews both finished second in their respective heats on Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The Varsity 4+ team raced to a fourth-place finish in the semis with a time of 7:44.1, while the Novice 8+ boat placed fifth with a time of 7:18.0. Only the top two boats from the semifinal races advanced to the Grand Final.
"We had a solid spring," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "Everyone showed signs of improvement with each day that went by, and that is very encouraging as we head into the summer and prepare for next season. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off in August and continue to move towards our goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships."
