Track to Host Cardinal Challenge on Saturday

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track team will host its first outdoor competition since 1987 on April 7, with the Cardinal Challenge. The last time the Cardinals hosted an outdoor meet was on May 10, 1987 at Parkway Field.
"We're particularly excited about this event," said Cardinal head coach Gene Weis. "It's not only our first opportunity in years to showcase our program and some of the University's best athletes, but we also feel strongly about the unique aspects of our facility. We have the only track venue in the state, and one of only several in this region, with a scoreboard and lights."
The competition has earned recognition as one of the United States Track Coaches Association's unique Collegiate Track & Field Series events. The meet will feature squads from Marquette University, Western Kentucky University and Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville.
The Collegiate Track & Field Series events are designed to bring back the enthusiasm and spirit of a team and focus to Track & Field, where competitions are conducted within a three hour time window and team scoring is announced after each event. And ultimately an overall team winner is produced.
"We will conduct a scored, team competition with our team against other teams," said Weis. "And we'll do it within the time frame of a typical sporting event. This will not be one of the day-long Track & Field festivals that spectators have come to accept from our sport."
The Cardinal Park Track facility is suited to enhance the excitement of an event of this nature. The track boasts a fast, wide turn oval and state-of-the-art rubberized surface (Martin ISS-200) and is also outfitted with the latest computerized, electronic, multi-camera finish line systems, designed to produce instant results.
