LOUISVILLE, KY -- The University of Louisville football team completed its first week of spring practice Saturday with a 70-play controlled scrimmage in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The scrimmage saw the passing game take a backseat to the U of L running attack in the team's first live action of 2001.
Senior running back Tony Stallings carried the football nine times for 70 yards and a touchdown, a four-yard run during the red-zone portion of the scrimmage.
Sophomore T.J. Patterson and junior Henry Miller added to the stat sheet by combining for 88 yards on 20 carries. Miller also added an 18-yard reception out of the backfield. Patterson and Miller are competing with Stallings and senior Chris Lester for playing time in the Cards' one-back set.
Junior quarterback Dave Ragone saw limited action, completing four of six passes for 31 yards including a pair to senior wideout Zek Parker.
Redshirt freshman signalcaller Stefon LeFors saw most of the action under center for U of L throwing 16 of the Cardinals' 27 passes on the day.
The only aerial touchdown of the scrimmage came when walk-on quarterback Jeff Hedges hit walk-on wide receiver Adam McCauley with a 45-yard scoring pass.
Defensively, the Cardinals picked up where they left off a year ago, intercepting three passes in the morning workout. Sophomore bandit back Michael Everett claimed two of the interceptions and also registered one of the Cards' four sacks.
Junior safety Anthony Floyd, who led Division I-A with 10 interceptions in 2000, also picked off a pass.
Redshirt freshman Brad Shushman highlighted the kicking game by converting four field goals. The Michigan native hit on tries of 37, 37, 42 and 47 yards. Fellow placekickers Wade Tydlacka and Nate Smith each added 37-yard field goals.
U of L will return to the practice field Tuesday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. workout at the Cardinal Football Complex.
