In addition to having a top-of-the-line home facility at his disposal in the newly redesigned Cardinal Club Golf Course, University of Louisville golf coach Mark Crabtree has one of the nation's finest freshmen classes on his roster according to the Golfstat Freshman Class Impact Rankings.
Crabtree's freshman class of Brett Jones, Mark Anderson and Charlie Woo rank No. 4 nationally with a 73.79 collective stroke average. The young Cardinals, who trail only Tulane, UC-Riverside and Indiana among the national leaders, own three of the top five stroke averages on the U of L squad.
Jones, a native of Paducah, Ky., led the trio and ranked second on the team with a 73.1 stroke average. He notched a top-15 finish with a three-under-par 213 at the Mid-Pines Intercollegiate, followed by a tie for fifth-place with a four-under-par 212 at the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational.
Anderson, who hails from Sioux Falls, S.D., ranked second among the freshman and third on the team with a 73.3 stroke average. He posted a tie for eighth-place with a season-best three-under-par 213 at the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational.
Charlie Woo, from Ontario, Canada, rounded out the freshman class with a 75.0 stroke average, good enough for fourth on the team. Woo's fall season was highlighted by a season-best two-under-par 214 and a tie for 11th-place at the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational.
Crabtree could not have been happier with what he saw from his youngsters in the fall season.
"I'm very pleased with the impact of our freshman class," Crabtree said. "Each of them contributed significantly to our success and I'm sure we'll see more of that once we get going again this spring."
Crabtree also realizes the importance of the playing time each of his freshmen saw in the fall season.
"The experience of playing as a freshman is critical to their development," Crabtree said. "I'm looking for them to continue to refine their games and up their level of play in the spring."
Jones, Anderson, Woo and the rest of the Cardinals return to action on February 11 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic in Gulfport, Miss.
