Men's golf coach Mark Crabtree announced today that Troy Hawkins has signed a national letter of intent to continue his education and golf career at the University of Louisville.
"We are excited to have a player of Troy's caliber joining our program next year. He brings a solid junior record with him, and he knows how to win, as shown by his two appearances in the winners circle last year."
Hawkins, a native of Elizabethtown, Ky., claimed victories this past year at the Future Collegians World Tour event in Belleville, Ill., and the Plantation Junior Tour in Hot Springs, Va. He also notched a fourth-place finish in the PGA Junior Series event in Lexington and a seventh-place finish in the 2001 National PGA Junior Championships in Westfield, Ohio.
"Troy should have a nice opportunity to come in and compete for a spot on the travel roster next fall," Crabtree said.
Crabtree believes his newest recruit's attitude has a lot to do with his success.
"I am impressed with Troy's desire to get better and his commitment to the game of golf. He has a strong passion and wants to learn."
Hawkins' ability to learn goes beyond the golf course. Over his prep career, Hawkins has accumulated a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked as the top student in his senior class at North Hardin High School.
