LOUISVILLE, KY -- University of Louisville men's golf coach Mark Crabtree announced today that freshmen Sam Smith and Colin Speirs (rhymes with ears) have enrolled for the spring semester and will be immediately eligible for competition for the Cardinals.
A native of Bedfordshire, England, Smith captured the Under-18 championship in Bedfordshire and earned the 2000 Southeast Schools championship for Leighton Buzzard. He also was a member of the 2000 England International Squad.
"I am very excited about the potential Sam brings to our team," said Crabtree. "He has competed and played against the best in England with success. He is an excellent addition to our squad."
Speirs, who hails from Perthshire, Scoland, was a member of the 2000 Scottish Under-18 International Team. He also finished second in the Faldo Junior Series Order of Merit this past season and posted a fourth-place showing at the 2000 Scotland Under-21 National Championship.
"Colin has established himself as one of the top junior players in Scotland," said Crabtree. "I am thrilled to have him in the program and look for both he and Sam to contribute right away."
Speirs and Smith will get their first opportunity to crack the Cardinal lineup when U of L opens the spring half of their schedule on Feb. 12 - 13. The Cardinals will travel to Gulfport, Miss., to take part in the Beau Rivage College Classic.
