LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky at the University of Louisville season opening football game may not kick off until Saturday, but Cardinal supporters already have something of which to be proud.
U of L supporters defeated University of Kentucky fans 41-34 in the inaugural Golf Challenge at Lake Forest Country Club.
"I thought it went great for an opening event," said U of L Golf Coach Mark Crabtree. "There was a lot of good competition on both sides with a close battle down to the end for bragging rights. We want this to be a showcase event each year leading up to the football rivalry game."
With four groups left on the course, U of L clung to a one-shot lead before closing it out 9-3 in the Ryder Cup style scoring format. A possible three points were awarded to each two-man team for the winner of the front nine, back nine and overall score. Proceeds from the event will go to support the men's golf programs at both schools.
