LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head football coach John L. Smith announced today that seniors Rashad Harris, Donovan Arp, Arnold Jackson and Jason Padget will serve as team captains for the 2000 season. The quartet was elected by their teammates prior to last Saturday's Spring Game.
Harris returns as a captain after serving the same capacity during the 1999 season. A three-year starter, Harris enters his fourth season in the middle of the Cardinal defense at a linebacker spot. The Huntsville, Ala. native recorded 96 tackles a season ago including nine for loss.
Arp was voted a captain despite suffering a ruptured left Achilles' tendon during spring practice. The defensive tackle underwent surgery to repair the damaged tendon, and the U of L medical staff is hopeful he will be ready when the Cardinals take the field Sept. 2 versus Kentucky.
A junior college transfer from Snow College in Utah, Arp tied for the team lead with seven sacks a season ago.
Jackson enters his senior season as the program's all-time leading receiver with 236 receptions in his first three collegiate campaigns.
A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Jackson is 63 catches shy of breaking the NCAA I-A mark for pass receptions in a career held by Trevor Insley of Nevada-Reno.
Padget started all 12 games a season ago at center and will be one of three returning starters along the offensive line for the Cardinals.
Like Arp, Padget was a junior college import prior to the 1999 season, opening his collegiate career at Phoenix College in Arizona.
