Rowers Win Silver, Bronze At SIRA Championships

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team competed at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships over the weekend and came home with a silver and a bronze medal.
The event, which included 56 teams from across the nation, was held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
In the Freshman/Novice 8+ competition, the Cardinals finished second out of 23 boats with a time of 7:01.5, just four seconds behind first-place Duke (6:57.5). Clemson (7:05.9) placed third and Notre Dame (7:07.09) was fourth.
In the Freshman/Novice 8+ B event, U of L placed third out of nine with a time of 7:52.1. Duke came in first in 7:35.9, followed by Indiana (7:37.1), Louisville and Notre Dame (7:52.9).
"I am glad a silver and a bronze came out of this weekend," said U of L head coach Julio Viyella. "This was a big regatta and we're extremely proud of the hardware we are bringing home. We'll use this weekend as a motivator for races to come."
The Cardinals travel to Madison, Wis., Saturday to compete in the Mid-West Championship Regatta.
