LOUISVILLE, KY -- University of Louisville men's golf coach Mark Crabtree announced today the signing of incoming freshmen Brett Jones (Paducah, Ky.) and Mark Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) to National Letters of Intent as he used the early signing period to ink a pair of future cornerstones for his Cardinal golf program. The pair will continue their education and play golf for the Cardinals beginning with the 2001-2002 academic year.
Jones finished third a year ago in the Kentucky High School Championship and was honored as the state's top player with the Mr. Golf Award. He is a two-time all-Kentucky honoree in the links and was a second team all-state selection in basketball as a junior for Tilghman High School.
"We are very excited about Brett joining our program," said Crabtree who guided U of L to a fourth place finish in the 2000 Conference USA championships. "He is a quality young man with the potential and opportunity to be an outstanding player. He is a proven winner with a great future ahead of him."
Jones is currently ranked 92nd in the nation by one national junior golf rating system and owns a resume with several top 15 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events.
Anderson is a two-time South Dakota state champion and has earned the state's player of the year award in each of the past two seasons while attending O'Gorman High School.
"Mark brings a national junior record with him filled with successes," said Crabtree. "He is very committed to becoming a collegiate player and I see his best days ahead of him. I anticipate he will jump right in next fall and establish himself as a freshman."
A National Honor Society student, Anderson was a national qualifier in 2000 for the USGA Boys' Amateur and the USGA Public Links Championships finishing in the top 64 at the boys' event. He also posted a pair of top 10 finishes in AJGA events this season.
Both players are expected to make an impact on the Cardinal lineup in 2001 as Crabtree continues to build the U of L program.
The Cardinals recently completed the fall portion of their 2000-2001 schedule posting four top seven team finishes and watching junior Grant Sturgeon capture the individual championship at the San Diego Invitational.
U of L will open the spring half of their schedule on Feb. 12 - 13 travelling to the Beau Rivage College Classic in Gulfport, Miss.
