LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three University of Louisville singles players and one doubles team claimed their division championships in the Louisville Invitational Tournament on Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Cody Conley defeated teammate Paulo Carvalho 6-3, 6-4 to win the "A" Singles division. Louisville's Matt Mayer beat Murray State's Alex Sundsten 6-4, 6-3 in the finals of the "B" singles flight. U of L freshman Jake Kirts won over Leonardo Lopez of Pikeville College 6-0, 6-2 to claim the flight "C" singles title. Brent McCombe of Louisville defeated Wright State's Chad Derry 6-3, 6-4 in the "A" singles consolation draw.
Wright State's Eric Ishida outlasted Southern Indiana's Brent Nelwan 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the finals of the "D" singles flight.
Louisville claimed the "A" doubles championship when Conley combined with Brent McCombe to defeat teammates Joachim Lien and Alex Sivertsen 8-5. Seong Ngiam Han and Hong Khoong Wai of Cumberland College teamed to beat Belmont's Willy Sandoval and Matteo Triacco 9-8(5) in the "B" doubles flight.
"This tournament shows how deep our team is and that they are on schedule with their development," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Cody Conley showed that he can be one of the better players in the country with his performance. We hope to take this momentum into the Tennessee Invitational and the Rolex Midewest Championships at the end of the month."
