Hattiesburg, MS - Bing Sun had 16 kills to lead the University of Louisville to three game sweep of Southern Miss in Conference USA Volleyball.
Louisville, 10-6 overall, posts a 4-3 league mark, with the 16-14, 15-5, 15-10 win. Southern Miss, 9-9, is now 2-5 in the league.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game before Louisville went on a 9-1 run powered by four kills for points by senior Kelly McClain. After the momentum evened out, the teams tied at 12, 13 and 14 before a McClain kill and a block by Bing Sun ended the game. Despite winning, the Cardinals were out-hit .316 to . 291.
"We are gelling as an offensive unit, and that makes all the difference," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "Every win in the Conference, especially on the road is important now that we dug ourselves a bit of a hole with some losses in the league.
Louisville popped out to a 11-2 lead in the second set and although Southern ran off three straight points to pull to 11-5 but didn't score again. Hitting was improved at .341 and three aces in the game, two by Lesley Drury, helped the Cardinals to a 15-5 win.
"We had good serve receive and that allowed us to keep the ball out of their hands," said Yelin.
Southern Miss pulled to a 4-2 lead in the early going of the third game. The Cardinals tied at five and then when on a 10-3 run to win the game and match.
Louisville's Stacey Mercer had 11 kills with McClain adding 10 kills and eight digs.
Southern Miss was led by Lindsay Westendorf's 18 kills.
