CINCINNATI, OH -- Bing Sun had 18 kills and 12 digs to lead the University of Louisille volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Cincinnati. The Cardinals won 15-11, 15-13, 15-9 to break the Bearcats' 10-match winning streak.
Louisville,14-6, now posts a 7-3 C-USA record. Fellow American Division member Cincinnati is now 17-5 and lost its first league match to drop to 9-1.
"A road win over one of the hottest teams in the conference proves that we are back on track," said Leonid Yelin. "Our hitters were very patient tonight because Cincinnati's defense can drive people to distraction."
Louisvile popped out to a 10-1 lead in the first game powered by the serving of Kelly McClain who served for the first six unanswered points. The Bearcats regrouped after using both their timeouts and scrapped back to 12-9 on a pair of blocks by Stephanie Meinig. Louisville got to game point on a block solo by McClain but allowed UC two more points before putting the game away. The win broke Cincinnati's 25 consecutive game streak. The Bearcats had not dropped a game in eight matches.
UC scored the first three points of the second game and then watched the Cardinals go on a 6-1 run. The teams tied at seven, eight, and eleven, before Bing Sun served two aces to get to 13. A Cardinal miss and a kill by Leslie Newell tied the game at 13. Louisvlle got to game point on a UC miss and a kill by Sun ended the game.
"Bing had a good game and mixed up her shots so they had to adjust for her whether she was front row or back." said Yelin. "Our senior Kelly McClain didn't have a lot of swings but had 20 digs and two blocks."
Although the Bearcats trail the series record 21-8, they had won three of the last four meetings including earlier this season at Cardinal Arena and last season in the C-USA Championship Tournament match.
The Cardinals are idle this weekend and return to action Tuesday Oct. 24 when they host Murray State.
