BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team fared well Saturday morning as it opened the 2000-01 season at the LemonHead Regatta in Bloomington, Ind.
In the program's first-ever competition at the varsity level, the Cardinals placed two boats among the top five in the Women's Open 4+ competition. The U of L "A" crew finished third with a time of 19:04, while the "B" boat placed fifth in 20:01. Indiana "A" won the nine-boat race with a time of 18:31.
The Cardinals placed fourth in the Women's Open 8+ race with a time of 19:09. The three-mile race served as the first-ever varsity race for a U of L eight squad. Indiana "A" won the nine-boat race in 18:12.
"These races represented the first-ever varsity races in U of L rowing history," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "The results demonstrate where we are now and help us prepare for where we want to be in the future. We have a lot of room to grow."
In the Women's Novice 8+, the Cards placed sixth out of 10 with a time of 20:09. Indiana "A" also won this race with a time of 18:41.
"The novices rowed very aggressively today," said U of L assistant coach Laurie Featherstone. "Each and everyone of the novices learned a great deal in their first-ever rowing race."
The Cardinals return to action Saturday, with the novices traveling to Indianapolis for the Head of the Elk Regatta, while the varsity team travels to Boston to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest two-day rowing event in the world.
