2024-25
Indoor
In 2024-25, his second indoor season with the Cardinals, Martin helped Jayden Ulrich to another dominant indoor season that culminated in the senior being named the USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, becoming the first in program history to win the award. Ulnder Martin's guidance, Ulrich capped her season off with a sixth-place in the women's shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships after earning her second straight ACC title in the shot put at the ACC Indoor Championships. At the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational, she recorded a personal-best and program-record mark of 18.40m at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational, the fifth-best mark in the NCAA and 24th-best mark in the world over the course of the 2024-25 indoor season. In addition to Ulrich's stellar campaign, Martin led Noah Koch to Second Team All-ACC honors in the men's shot put while the senior also placed eighth in the men's weight throw at the ACC Indoor Championships.
Outdoor
The Louisville throwers put together another stellar outdoor season under Martin's guidance in 2025, led by another stellar season from Jayden Ulrich. After putting her name on the map in 2024, Ulrich continued to establish herself as one of the top young throwers in the world, moving up to second in collegiate history and third in U.S. history in the discus with a program-record and conference-record mark of 69.39m at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational. Following the record-breaking performance, Ulrich was added to the first of four straight watch lists for The Bowerman, becoming the first athlete in program history to be included on a watch list for the most prestigious award in collegiate track & field. Ulrich also defended her ACC titles in both the shot put and discus (breaking her own discus meet record in the process) later in the season at the ACC Outdoor Championships, securing 20 points for the Cardinals and winning Women's Field MVP honors for the meet. The senior capped off her collegiate career with two First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she placed fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus.
Martin also guided graduate student Jade Whitfield to a successful season after she transferred to Louisville for her final collegiate season, placing third in the discus at the ACC Outdoor Championships before earning Second Team All-American distinction in the event with a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Additionally, Martin coached Noah Koch to a runner-up finish in the men's shot put at the ACC Outdoor Championships, where he also placed sixth in the men's discus.
2023-24
Indoor
Martin's first indoor season on staff with the Cardinals during the 2023-24 season was headlined by a First Team All-American performance by Jayden Ulrich, who finished sixth in the women's shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The junior also won the ACC title in the event in a campaign where she was recognized as the ACC Indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Week three times. Martin also helped Noah Koch score in two events at the conference championship meet, where he placed seventh in the men's shot put and eighth in the men's weight throw.
Outdoor
During the 2024 outdoor season, Martin led Jayden Ulrich to one of the greatest outdoor seasons the Louisville program has seen from a track & field athlete, culminating in a pair of USTFCCCA regional honors for the pair and a bid to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games for Ulrich, who became the first athlete in program history to represent Team USA at the Olympics.
To cap off the NCAA season in June, Ulrich finished as the national runner-up in the women's discus and placed fourth in the women's shot put to become the first female in program history to earn a pair of top-five individual finishes at the same national championship meet. The junior also won a pair of ACC titles in the events while setting a new meet record of 61.31m in the discus in the process. Over the course of the season, Martin helped Ulrich shatter the previous program records with marks of 18.66m in the shot put and 64.29m in the discus.
2014-23 - Indiana University - Assistant Coach
Prior to his time at Louisville, Martin spent nine seasons (2014-23) as the throws coach at Indiana University, where he saw his athletes earn 19 USTFCCCA All-America honors, five individual Big Ten titles, multiple international championships and broke over 30 program records.
The 2022-23 outdoor season was marked by a pair of NCAA qualifications and honorable mention All-American nods for Noah Koch and Jayden Ulrich. Koch concluded his first season with the Hoosiers by becoming the first IU NCAA qualifier in the discus since 1994. Ulrich qualified for both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships in the women’s shot put while bettering her own school record in the discus earlier in the season.
Martin mentored two freshman, Ulrich and Sean Mockler, to NCAA berths and record-breaking performances over the course of the 2021-22 season. Ulrich originally broke a 30-year-old program record in the discus on her way to winning the Big Ten Championship while also earning two NCAA qualifications on the year in the shot put and discus. Mockler also set a new IU record in the men’s hammer throw, earning a spot on the podium at the Big Ten Championships and finishing as an All-American in the event.
The 2018-19 season featured unprecedented success for Indiana’s throws group with Martin’s athletes earning four All-American accolades while also seeing Khayla Dawson capture the Big Ten outdoor championship in the women’s shot put and Willie Morrison break the Philippines national record in the men’s shot put.
During his first four seasons in Bloomington, Indiana throwers finished in the top-16 nationally six times, won three Big Ten titles, and saw Morrison break the Hoosiers’ program record in the men’s indoor shot put twice and the men’s outdoor shot put record four times.
Personal
At the time of his hire in 2014, Martin held the No. 16 spot on the all-time world performance list in the men’s shot put with a lifetime-best mark of 22.10m (72-6.25). During his athletic career, Martin represented the United States at three World Championships, finishing as a finalist at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.
Martin was a nine-time All-American at Auburn University, including a pair of national championships in 2008 in the shot put and the hammer throw, the first time since the 1930s an athlete had won NCAA Championships in those events at the same national meet.
The Bloomington, Ind. native graduated from Auburn with a bachelor’s degree in education and earned a master of science in sport management from Florida.
