Baylee Mires was added to the Louisville track & field/cross country coaching staff as an assistant distance coach on July 25, 2023.
During her time at UofL, Mires has helped guide the Louisville distance squad to two USTFCCCA All-American honors, four NCAA Championships qualifications, six All-ACC honors, five NCAA Regionals bids, 12 program records, and eight freshman records.
2024-25
Cross Country
The 2024 cross country season was headlined by Geoffrey Kirwa, who began his Louisville career by becoming the first Louisville male to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships since 2016. To punch his ticket to the national championship meet, the freshman placed seventh overall at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships to earn All-Region distinction, while Rylee Penn also earned All-Region honors with a 25th-place finish in the women's 6K to lead the Louisville women to a seventh-place finish at the meet, their best team finish since 2017. At the ACC Cross Country Championships, the Louisville women were led to a 10th-place finish by Layla Roebke, who earned All-ACC honors by finishing 17th in the women's 6K, while the men's squad placed 15th in the team standings.
Indoor
Over the course of the 2024-25 indoor season, Mires helped guide Layla Roebke to a silver medal in the women's 5000m and an eighth-place finish in the women's 3000m at the ACC Indoor Championships, while Ryan Farrell earned Second Team All-ACC distinction with a fourth-place finish at the conference championship meet in the men's 800m. The Louisville distance program also set three program records throughout the season as Ryan Farrell (men's 800m), Geoffrey Kirwa (men's mile) and Layla Roebke (women's 3000m) each jumped to the top of the Louisville leaderboard in their respective events. Kirwa also set a trio of freshman records in the men's mile, 3000m and 5000m, while Julia Schmitt reset the Louisville freshman record in the women's mile.
Outdoor
During the 2025 outdoor season, Mires oversaw a historic freshman campaign from Geoffrey Kirwa, who finished as the national runner-up in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after moving up to second in collegiate history in the event earlier in the season at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 8:13.89 that set a new program record, ACC record, and meet record. Kirwa also notably set a new school record of 13:30.83 in the men's 5000m at the Stanford Invitational, and earned Second Team All-ACC distinction with a fourth-place finish in the men's 10000m at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Additionally, Mires helped Layla Roebke put together a record-breaking season of her own in the steeplechase, recording the four fastest times in program history in the women's 3000m steeplechase while earning a silver medal at the ACC Outdoor Championships in a school-record time of 9:49.08 and Honorable Mention All-American honors in her first career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Roebke also broke the program record in the women's 5000m, clocking a time of 15:46.36 at the Stanford Invitational. Along with the four program records between Kirwa and Roebke, the distance group also set a trio of freshman records, with Kirwa setting the top rookie marks in the men's 5000m and 3000m steeplechase and Olivia Alessandrini setting a new freshman record in the women's 5000m.
2023-24
Cross Country
During the 2023 cross country season, Mires helped lead the Louisville women to a ninth-place team finish at the NCAA Southeast Regionals, their highest team finish since 2017, while the men's team placed 13th to improve off their 15th-place finish in 2022 and the men finished 14th as a team.
Indoor
The 2023-24 indoor season saw Mires help the Louisville distance squad make an immediate mark on the record books, as Ian Kibiwot set new program-bests in both the men's 3000m and 5000m and Temi Ariyo bested the previous freshman record in the women's mile. Kibiwot also scored in the 5000m at the ACC Indoor Championships for the second consecutive season, placing eighth in the event.
Outdoor
On the outdoor oval during the 2024 season, Mires oversaw the rapid improvement of Ian Kibiwot, who placed sixth in the men's 10000m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships that shattered his own school record by over 15 seconds in his first career appearance at a national championship meet. Prior to becoming the first All-American in the event in program history, Kibiwot qualified for the NCAA East Regionals in both the 5000m and 10000m, punching his ticket to the national championships in the 10000m with a fourth-place finish at the regional meet. The senior also earned Second Team All-ACC honors in the men's 5000m, placing sixth at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Mires also helped Rylee Penn to a school-record performance in the women's 1500m, while the senior also earned a spot at the NCAA East Regional in the event.
2022-23 - Florida State University - Assistant Coach
Over the course of her two years of coaching in the ACC with Florida State and Notre Dame prior to coming to Louisville, Mires coached her athletes to 20 NCAA qualifications, 12 NCAA Preliminaries bids, 10 All-ACC honors, and seen two teams advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Mires spent the 2022-23 as an assistant coach overseeing the women’s distance program at Florida State, immediately leading the women’s cross country team to an appearance at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships, where they placed 18th in the nation after taking second at the NCAA South Region Championships and fifth at the ACC Championships.
The track season saw Mires guide Alyson Churchill to an NCAA berth in the outdoor 5000m where she placed 11th to earn second team All-America distinction. Churchill was also named second team All-ACC after taking fourth place in the 1500m at the ACC Outdoor Championships while also placing seventh in the 5000m.
2021-22 - University of Notre Dame - Assistant Coach
During the 2021-22 season, Mires got her collegiate coaching career started at Notre Dame where she functioned as the assistant women’s distance coach. Her brief stay in South Bend yielded nine NCAA All-Americans, 10 NCAA First Round entries, seven All-ACC honorees, and a fifth-place finish for the women’s cross country team at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
High School Coaching Career
She also holds experience in coaching at the high school level, serving as an assistant cross country and track coach for Bishop Blanchet High School and Interlake High School in the Greater Seattle area.
Personal
Mires ran professionally for the Brooks Beast Track Club and Under Armour after an illustrious collegiate career at the University of Washington from 2012-16. While a member of the Huskies program, she earned first team All-American honors in the 800m as a senior and in the DMR as both a junior and senior while also being named second team All-America in the 800m as a junior. She was also a member of the 2012 national championship DMR team as a freshman as the first group of UW women to win an indoor championship.
Hailing from Spokane, Washington, Mires graduated from Washington in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood development and family studies with a minor in nutrition.
