Ray Ganong is in his 33rd season on the UofL athletic staff as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Cardinals.
Ganong, 63, joined the UofL staff in 1985 after six seasons at Miami (Fla.) where he helped the Hurricanes win their first national titles in both football in 1983 and baseball in 1982.
He is one of a select few strength coaches in America to have a National Championship ring in three different sports. Ray has worked for five head coaches who have won national championships: Denny Crum, basketball, Louisville, 1997-2000; Howard Schellenberger, football, Miami, 1979-83; Jimmy Johnson, football, Miami 1984; Ron Fraser, baseball, Miami, 1980-82; and Rick Pitino, 2001 to present.
Ganong has trained numerous NFL, MLB, and NBA players, as well as UofL’s Olympic medalist bobsledder Doug Sharp for 18 months prior to the Olympic Trials.
A pioneer in his field, he was the first person to finish the national certification in its first year in 1985 and has been a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) ever since. He was NSCA Conference USA Strength and Conditioning Specialist of the Year in 1998. Ganong has lectured nationally and internationally and has been published in the National Strength and Conditioning Association Journal.
Since 1985, Ganong has run in 28 Kentucky Derby Mini Marathons, will run in the 2018 event and also competes as a power lifter.
Ganong earned his master’s degree in health education from Miami in 1985. A native of Baltimore, Ganong and his wife Maria Fernandez have two children: Raquel and Erika.
