Bio
Senior: Sander continued to add valuable freestyle depth for the Cardinals during his final season. He raced to sixth in the 100 freestyle (45.42 and seventh in the 50 freestyle (20.93) at the UofL First Chance Invitational and competed in dual meets against Xavier, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Kentucky, and Indiana. At the Purdue Invitational, he finished 24th in the 100 freestyle (46.52), 30th in the 200 freestyle (1:42.19), and 32nd in the 50 free (21.04). For his performances in both the pool and in the classroom, Sander was awarded ACC Honor Roll honors.
Junior: Sander put together a strong performance at the Louisville First Chance Meet, where he recorded season-bests in each of his events. At the meet, he took third in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.64, while also taking fifth in the 50 free (21.18) and seventh in the 100 free (45.93). He also added a trio of solid swims at the Indiana Invitational, posting times of 21.33 in the 50 free, 46.64 in the 100 free and 1:40.78 in the 200 free.
Sophomore: As a sophomore, Sander added depth for the Cardinals in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races. At the UofL Invitational, he turned in a season-best time in the 200 free, finishing third with a 1:40.07. He also competed in the 100 free, placing fifth with a 45.77. Sander qualified for the Winter National Championships in the 200 free, where he stopped the clock in a time of 1:41.04. At the meet against Tennessee, he put up a season-best time in the 50 free with a 21.92.
Freshman: At the UofL Invitational, Derek scored 64 points for the Cardinals. He finished fourth in the 200 free (1:38.78), eighth in the 100 free (45.51), and 11th in the 50 free (20.85). Derek also competed in the Arena Pro Swim Series in Atlanta, swimming the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter freestyle.
Prep: Derek Sander lives in Madison, AL but his family is from Louisville. He competed for Bob Jones High School, Madison Dolphins and Madison and Huntsville swimming associations. Sander was the Team Captain of the Bob Jones Swim and Dive team and the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) State Champion in 100-yard and 200-yard Freestyle in both 2014 and 2015 seasons. Sander was an exceptional student, he was a member of the National Honors Society since 2013-2016. His best time in the 50-free is 20.82 with a 44.60 in the 100-free. His best mark in the 200-free is a 1:37.67.
Personal: Major is civil engineering. Born November 12, 1997.
