University Faculty and Staff
UofL’s commitment to institutional control and maintaining NCAA compliance is a campus-wide, shared responsibility. This responsibility includes the obligation, per NCAA rules, for UofL faculty and staff to report suspected or potential NCAA violations.
The following guidelines summarize the NCAA rules related to an institutional employee’s involvement with student-athletes and prospective student-athletes:
- A faculty or staff member should never provide a student-athlete an extra benefit. By NCAA definition, an extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or representative of the institution’s athletics interest to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete family member or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.
- A faculty or staff member should never make any academic exceptions that result in a grade change, academic credit or fulfilment of a graduation requirement when such an exception is not generally available to the institution’s students.
- A faculty or staff member should never provide supplies, such as computers, printers, or cell phones, for a student-athlete that are not generally available to the student body.
- Student-athletes may receive an occasional meal in the locale of the institution on infrequent and special occasions from an institutional staff member. An institutional staff member may provide reasonable local transportation to student-athlete to attend such meals.
- An athletics department staff member may arrange academic interviews for a prospective student-athlete on an unofficial visit.
