Austing will join the Cardinals as the special assistant to the head coach
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville men's basketball head coach announced the addition of high school coaching veteran Tim Austing to his staff.
Austing has coached high school basketball in Ohio for 27 years. He will take on the role of special assistant to the head coach beginning in the 2026-27 season.
"There are so many brilliant high school coaches around the country and Tim has always been one of them," said Kelsey. "He's one of the best coaches I know in any sport. He has been a tremendous sounding board and confidant to me for a long time. We are fortunate to have Tim join our staff here at Louisville."
"I'm honored to join Coach Kelsey and his staff and to become part of the Louisville basketball program," said Austing. "The tradition, passion and expectations that come with wearing the Cardinal logo make this the opportunity of a lifetime. I have witnessed firsthand the unique culture and relentless passion Coach Kelsey has built at every stop of his career. I can't wait to get to work and do my part to help bring championships back to Louisville."
Austing joins Kelsey's staff after five seasons as head coach of Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He led Sycamore to two Greater Miami Conference (GMC) Championships and a district title in 2025, its first district championship since 2004. He was named GMC Coach of the Year in 2021, his first year at Sycamore.
In the early 2010's, Austing was the head boys basketball coach at Fairfield for five seasons. During his tenure, he won two Greater Miami Conference titles, earned two GMC Coach of the Year awards and led the Indians to the 2012 OHSAA Division I Final Four, the program's first state final four appearance in over 70 years. Austing was named 2012 Cincinnati Enquirer Coach of the Year for his achievement.
Prior to beginning his head coaching stint at Fairfield in 2009, Austing was the longtime assistant coach to Joe Shoenfeld at Elder High School, where Austing and Kelsey both graduated from in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
