April 30, 2026 | Track & Field
The sophomore makes his second career watch list appearance for the most prestigious award in collegiate track & field.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of Louisville men's track & field sophomore Geoffrey Kirwa has been added to The Bowerman Men's Watch List, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday.
With the honor, Kirwa earns his second career watch list appearance for the most prestigious award in collegiate track & field, after becoming the first male in program history to earn a spot on the watch list in May 2025.
The award, bestowed annually to the most outstanding men's and women's athlete in collegiate track & field, considers athletes' performances during the NCAA indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons. The performance window for the current season began on November 28, 2025, and will end on June 13, 2026.
Kirwa, a sophomore from Kapsabet, Kenya, continued to stake his claim as one of the top steeplechasers in the world, racing to a time of 8:08.10 in his season debut in the event at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Apr. 16.
The time currently ranks as the fastest in the world thus far in 2026 and the second-fastest in collegiate history, moving within striking distance of the long-standing NCAA record of 8:05.4 that was set by Washington State's Henry Rono in 1978.
Additionally, Kirwa took nearly six seconds off his own previous program, ACC, and meet records, improving on his time of 8:13.89 from the 2025 Bryan Clay Invitational last April, which had originally moved him up to No. 2 in NCAA history.
The native of Kapsabet, Kenya now owns three of the top 10 individual performances in the 3000m steeplechase in NCAA history, including his times at the last two Bryan Clay Invitationals and an 8:17.12 performance at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he finished as the national runner-up.
Along with his success in the steeplechase, Kirwa currently holds the seventh-fastest 5000m in the NCAA this season with his time of 13:21.49 from the Stanford Invitational on Apr. 3 that shaved nine seconds off his own Louisville program record.
