March 13, 2026 | Track & Field
The freshman earned First Team All-American distinction after crossing the line in 13:38.02.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Louisville track & field teams closed the first day of competition at the 2026 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Elsingi Kipruto earned First Team All-American distinction in the men's 5000m to close his freshman indoor campaign, placing fourth with a time of 13:38.02 to finish as the top rookie in the field and claim the second All-American honor of his young career.
In a tactical race that featured a blistering final mile as the pace continued to drop over the course of the race, Kipruto earned the best finish for a Louisville male in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships in program history and the best individual finish for a Louisville male at the indoor national championship meet since 2023.
Along with Kipruto's stellar showing in the 5000m, KJ Byrd began competition in the men's heptathlon on Friday afternoon, ranking seventh in the overall standings at the conclusion of the day, accumulating 3,279 points through the first four events.
The sophomore notably smashed his previous personal best in the long jump with a mark of 7.46m (24-5.75), while also clocking a 60m time of 6.99 and posting marks of 1.97m (6-5.5) in the high jump and 13.41m (44-0) in the shot put.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will close tomorrow with Byrd set to compete in the final three events of the heptathlon, while Ashley Callahan and Iliana Triantafyllou will contest the women's pole vault.
