Owens Building the Depth on the Offensive Line
August 05, 2025 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Offensive line coach Richard Owens is entering his third season as the University of Louisville offensive line coach and has brought a physicallity and toughness to this unit. The Cardinals have been able to run the football at a high level and produceÂ
"Competition has been great," Owens said. "We're trying to move some pieces around. We're trying to see what the best looks like on the offensive line. It's us looking to see who is going to play at the highest level and trying to get them to gel together.
Under Owen's guidance, the offensive line has produced a pair 1,000-yard rusher and have averaged better than 30 points per game in each of the first two seasons. Owens, a former tight end for the Cardinals, has been able to build depth and establish a group of seven or eight consistent players.
"Right now, we're just rotating guys in there," Owens said. We're evaluating all the pieces and creating practice film. But, it's going to be constant evaluation and see what kind of depth we can build for that first game and moving forward."
One of those guys in the mix guard Lance Robinson, who has played only one game in his first two seasons. His UofL career was slowed by an eligibility issue that forced him to miss nearly all of 2023. He was also injured at the start of fall camp last season so he's eager to get on the field.
"First week of competition, the guys are coming out and competing very well," Lance Robinson said. "They are getting into their offensive playbook and learning the plays. They 're trying to gel together and bringing the young guys along with us. We have a good group  upfront and we have a lot of noise to make."
Despite the setbacks, Robinson is just anxious for that first game on Aug. 30 against Eastern Kentucky.
"Getting hurt last season was a big obstacle," Robinson said. "It showed me a lot about myself as a person. It was a big character builder for me. I took that as motivation for me and keep working hard, and showing the young guys that I'm still here for them.
Rasheed Miller is another returning component upfront but was slowed over the latter half of the season with a hand injury. The redshirt senior is ready to put that behind him and cap off his career with a big season.
"We have the right pieces," Miller said. "I feel like we have a lot of guys who are hungry for it and know what the standard is out there."
The Cardinals return to action on Thursday morning with the first practice in full pads.
