Cardinals Blank Blazers for Second Straight Win
August 25, 2025 | Men's Soccer
The 1-0 victory marks the program's first win over UAB since 2002.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team secured its second straight win to open the season, defeating UAB 1-0 for the first time since Nov. 11, 2002.
The Cardinals wasted little time finding the breakthrough as Michael Lee scored in the ninth minute, finishing a setup from Chase Vazquez. Louisville carried that early momentum through much of the opening half, generating six shots and four corner kicks before the break.
UAB looked to respond and created several opportunities, but the Cards' defense remained organized. Goalkeeper Alex Svetanoff was called on just once, making a crucial late save to preserve the clean sheet. It marked his second consecutive shutout to start the season, as Louisville has yet to concede a goal through 180 minutes of play.
Freshman Nicholas Parham provided a spark off the bench with a team-high four shots, while sophomores TJ Kahoalii and Olayinka Ogunleye each forced saves in the second half as the Cards continued to press for an insurance tally. Louisville ended the night with an 11-8 advantage in total shots and a 7-4 edge in corners.
The Blazers pushed forward in the final 15 minutes, but Louisville's back line—anchored by Ogunleye, Noah De Blasis, and Ryan Quintos—held firm to secure the win. Despite being booked twice in the first half, the Cards stayed composed and closed out the result on the road.
With the victory, Louisville opens the 2025 campaign with back-to-back wins for the fourth straight season. The Cards return home later this week to continue non-conference play against IU Indy on Friday, August 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
