Cardinals Clinch Four More Spots at NCAA Outdoor Championships
May 30, 2025 | Track & Field
Ashley Callahan (women’s pole vault), Geoffrey Kirwa (men’s 3000m steeplechase), Roman Kuleshov (men’s triple jump), and Jayden Ulrich (women’s shot put) all advanced.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four University of Louisville track & field student-athletes earned their way to the national championship meet as the Cardinals capped off their second day of competition at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Round on Friday.
Ashley Callahan (women's pole vault), Geoffrey Kirwa (men's 3000m steeplechase), Roman Kuleshov (men's triple jump), and Jayden Ulrich (women's shot put) all punched their tickets to Eugene, giving the Cards a total of eight national championship qualifications heading into the final day of regional competition.
Making his first appearance in the men's 3000m steeplechase since moving to second in collegiate history with an NCAA-leading time of 8:13.89 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 16, Kirwa advanced to the national championship in convincing fashion, cruising to a dominant heat win in 8:26.25, the second-fastest time of the day.
Ulrich also clinched her spot in Oregon for the fourth consecutive season, finishing third in the women's shot put with a final mark of 17.97m (58-11.5). The 2024 Paris Olympian will step into the ring tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET in the women's discus throw as she looks to become the first Cardinal to qualify in multiple events in back-to-back seasons since 2017.
After competition in the women's pole vault was postponed from Thursday afternoon due to inclement weather conditions, Callahan showed no ill effects from the delay by clearing a bar of 4.24m (13-11) to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in her career. Additionally, Callahan's qualification makes it seven straight years that Louisville has sent a female pole vaulter to the outdoor national championship meet.
The final NCAA qualification of the day for the Cardinals came in the men's triple jump, as Kuleshov booked his spot at the national championship meet for the first time in his career. As the last jumper remaining in the competition, Kuleshov leapt 15.80m (51-10) to move up from 19th to the coveted 12th spot, securing his place in Eugene.
The Cardinals were also represented in the women's pole vault by Iliana Triantafyllou, who closed her sophomore campaign with a clearance of 4.09m (13-5) to place 16th and narrowly miss out on her first national championship appearance, while Miller Jones competed in the men's triple jump, placing 25th with a mark of 15.26m (50-0.75) in his first regional meet.
The Cards will close out competition at the regional meet tomorrow when they field eight athletes in six events. The full schedule of events for Louisville athletes on the fourth and final day of competition can be found below.
