Cardinals Continue Homestand with No. 21 Cal
February 05, 2025 | Women's Basketball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's basketball team (15-7, 8-3 ACC) continues its three-game homestand with a midweek matchup against another ranked opponent. Louisville is set to welcome ACC newcomer and 21st-ranked Cal Golden Bears (19-4, 7-3 ACC) to the KFC Yum! Center on Thursday. The Cards and Golden Bears will square off at 8 p.m. ET and it will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
The Cardinals are used to playing ranked opponents this season as Thursday's game will be the eighth time this season the Cards will face a ranked opponent. It will be the second-straight ranked opponent the Cards will face after squaring off with No. 3 Notre Dame this past weekend. Five of the Cardinals remaining seven games are against teams currently ranked in the Top 25.
The Cardinals schedule this season is among the toughest in the country. On the whole, Louisville has the 18th toughest schedule in the nation and the fourth-toughest in the ACC behind Duke (2nd), NC State (7th) and North Carolina (16th). Looking at the remaining schedule, Louisville has the ninth-toughest schedule in the country and the hardest remaining among ACC teams.
Earlier this week Tajianna Roberts was named ACC Rookie of the Week following her performances against SMU and No. 3 Notre Dame. She scored a team-high 22 points, including the game-winning bucket with 56.0 seconds left in the win over SMU. Against No. 3 Notre Dame, Roberts led the team with 17 points and hit four threes in the first half. It was her fourth Rookie of the Week honor this season, the most in a single season since Shoni Schimmel earned four in the BIG EAST during the 2010-11 season.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN BEARS
Cal comes into Thursday's matchup with an 19-4 overall record and are 7-3 in ACC play this season. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 21 in the AP and the Coaches poll heading into Thursday's game. Cal is a threat from behind the arc as they rank second in the ACC and 16th nationally with 9.1 made per game this season. The Golden Bears have the top two three-point scorers in the conference and two of the best in the nation. Ioanna Krimili leads the ACC and ranks fifth nationally with 69 three-pointers this season. Right behind her is Lulu Twidale, who is second in the ACC and sixth nationally with 67 three-pointers made. Cal is efficient from the field as they are second in the ACC and 31st nationally with a 46.1 field goal percentage. The Golden Bears also rank third in the ACC in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to a 37.6 field goal percentage this season.
Series History - This will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools as Cal is in its first season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville holds a 2-1 all-time series advantage and the first meeting between the two schools came on the game's biggest stage. The two programs met in the national semifinals during the 2013 Final Four in New Orleans. The Cardinals came away with a 64-57 win to advance to the program's second-ever national championship game appearance.
Last Meeting (Nov. 15, 2015) - With no seniors and nine freshmen and sophomores on his roster, Louisville coach Jeff Walz knew the start of the season could get bumpy. Sunday's opener proved it as his No. 8 Cardinals lost 75-71 at home to California. Cal (2-0) used its significant size advantage to overcome 27 turnovers and earn the upset. Louisville only managed 24 points off those takeaways and the Golden Bears outrebounded Louisville 50-27. Briahanna Jackson led Louisville (0-1) with 21 points in her first game since transferring from Central Florida. The junior also added six steals, three assists and three rebounds. The young Cardinals are talented - their five-woman freshman class was ranked No. 1 in the country - but everyone has room to grow in the mental part of the game with two juniors as the only upperclassmen.
