The Cards pair named co-champions in doubles at ITA Sectionals
ATHENS, Ga. - With a win in the semifinals at ITA South Sectionals, the University of Louisville men's tennis tandem of Matei Onofrei and Andre' Steinbach sealed their spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship. This marks the first postseason doubles appearance for both players.Â
Onofrei and Steinbach faced off against Matteo Antonescu and Michael Andre who played for regional rival Indiana. The Hoosiers duo got off to an early lead by taking the first set, but the Louisville pair rallied back to claim a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory and a trip to nationals.Â
Since the duo clinched their spot in the tournament, they will not be competing in a championship match, thus naming them co-champions of the ITA Sectionals doubles bracket.Â
The NCAA Doubles Championship will begin on Nov. 18 and the championship match will be played on Nov. 23. It will be played in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus.Â
