Louisville wins 104-47 over NJIT on Wednesday night
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ryan Conwell scored a season-high 32 points to lead the No. 6/5 University of Louisville men's basketball team to a 104-47 win over NJIT Wednesday evening at the KFC Yum! Center.
With the win, Louisville improves to 7-0 on the season, continuing its best start since the 2019-20 campaign. The Cards have now scored at least 100 points in four games this season, the most since 1989-90.
"Our guys were on it; they were on it," said UofL head coach Pat Kelsey. "They were on it in preparation, one day turnaround. Obviously from a talent standpoint, our team overall is more talented, but our guys played the right way. They prepared the right way. I thought yesterday was really good. They were locked in. We've played several games in a short amount of time. We have a bunch of guys with nicks and bruises, banged up and a lot of stuff going on. We treated this game like our Super Bowl because that's what we do for every single game."
The Cardinals opened the scoring early with 3-pointers by Ryan Conwell and Isaac McKneely and a dunk by Sananda Fru to take an 8-0 lead, holding NJIT scoreless for nearly four minutes before a dunk by Ari Fulton put the Highlanders on the scoreboard. The six-point deficit would be the closest NJIT would get as the teams traded baskets before Louisville used a 23-8 run to end the half.
The Cardinals were hot from the field in the first half, shooting 50% (20-for-40) including 46% from behind the arc with 13 threes, the most in any half this season. Conwell poured in 14 points, going 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from deep in the first 20 minutes.
Louisville entered halftime with a 52-20 lead, marking the fifth time this season with at least 50 points in the first half.
After the break, the Cards picked up where they left off with a dunk by Fru followed by a Conwell 3-pointer as Louisville opened the half with 17-9 run and went on to outscore the Highlanders 52-27 the second half.
"Even when the lead got expanded, our guys continued to hit all of our metrics and all of our goals in terms of the effort things we do - run the floor, crashing the offensive glass, guard it right down there until the end, shared the ball," said Kelsey. "We had a bunch of assists. Guys were giving up good shots for great shots. Everything I could have asked from them in preparation yesterday and attacking everything today, I was really proud of them."
Four Cardinals finished in double figures with Conwell's 32-point effort leading all scorers. The senior guard went 9-for-17 from the field and 8-for-15 from 3-point range and pulled down a season-high nine rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double while dishing out a season-high six assists. McKneely matched his season high with 17 points (6-for-11), connecting on five 3s. Adrian Wooley tallied 15 points (5-of-6) off the bench while J'Vonne Hadley chipped in 12 points, going 4-of-7 from the field.
In the game, Louisville shot 20-of-48 from 3-point range – two short of a program record - and finished at 49.3% (36-for-73) from the field. The Cards also matched season high 24 assists with Mikel Brown Jr. leading the way with seven and Conwell and Aly Khalifa dishing out six each.
Louisville was firing on all cylinders, also winning the rebound battle 59-21 with a season-high 20 offensive boards and setting a new program record with the 38-rebound margin. Conwell and Kobe Rodgers led the way with nine boards apiece.
Duncan Quentin scored nine points to lead the Highlanders who drop to 3-5 on the season.
The Cardinals will return to action on December 3 when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to face No. 22/22 Arkansas in the ACC/SEC Challenge.
