Six double figure scorers lead Louisville to 4-0 record
LOUISVILLE, Ky - The No. 12-ranked University of Louisville men's basketball team finished their homestand with a 106-81 victory against the Ohio Bobcats Saturday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center.
Â
The Cards have scored 100 points in three games in a single season for the first time since the 2010-2011 season.
Â
"I am proud of our guys," said head coach Pat Kelsey. "Coming off a game that was the magnitude of the one the other night in terms of hype, I worried a little bit about human nature, whether there would be some kind of let down. But that goes against everything we believe in. We prepare for South Carolina State with the same intensity that we prepare for the team down the road – the same way we prepared for this game. I thought our guys were phenomenal in preparation and were on the details. We had a couple of great days of practice and played against a good team tonight. I have known Jeff Boals for a long time. We came into the business at the same time. He was an assistant at Ohio State and I was at Wake Forest and Xavier. We became head coaches the same time. They run good stuff and have good players, with an older team. I think their point guard is a really, really good player. I thought our guys played hard as 44 percent of our misses we got back, which is great. We had a 12 percent turnover rate, high us, which is great. A 68 percent assist rate is great. On the defensive end, I thought there were ebb and flows throughout the game. There were times where we let our foot off the accelerator a little bit. Our guys caught themselves at halftime and there was great GBT, which stands for 'Great Basketball Talk' before the coaches ever got in there. Even down the stretch when there were four minutes left in the game, the guys were aware of where they were on points per possession. They were like 'man, let's get that down'. Let's get three stops in a row from 1.06 and get it to 1.03. I don't know what it ended up but I love that kind of stuff."
Â
Louisville broke away from the Bobcats with an 8-0 run just three minutes into the game, leading to a 17-7 lead by the 14:19 mark. Back-to-back Isaac McKneely 3-pointers at 5:05 and 4:13 led to a 17-point advantage that the Cards would eventually push as high as 21 points in the opening half.
Â
The Cards led 59-44 going into the break. Louisville shot 53% beyond the arc and 71% from the free throw line in the first half of action. The Bobcats had three double-digit scorers in the first half, while Louisville also had three in Ryan Conwell, Mikel Brown Jr. and Isaac McKneely.
Â
Coming back from halftime, the Bobcats cut their deficit down to 12, but Louisville used a 9-0 run to push its advantage to 81-59 with just under 11 minutes to play. In the waning minutes of the contest, Kasean Pryor and Ryan Conwell hit back-to-back 3's to bring the largest lead of the game to 26 points.
Â
Louisville had six men finish in double figures: Sananda Fru, J'Vonne Hadley, Adrian Wooley, Brown, McKneely, and Conwell. Ohio had three in double figures for the game, with Jackson Paveletzke scoring a game-high 28 points.
Â
Conwell was efficient against the Bobcats with a team-high 22-point performance, shooting 50% from beyond the arc. Conwell also notched six boards and a season-high three assists.
Â
McKneely showed his range with 12 of his 15 points coming behind the 3-point line, shooting 40% from that range, while adding his first block as a Cardinal.
Â
Brown continued his freshman campaign with 19 points, seven assists and a steal. Wooley made his presence known on offense, scoring 11 points on 50 percent shooting from three. Wooley also contributed on the defensive end, earning six rebounds, two steals and a block.
Â
Louisville shot 50% from the field, 45% from long range, and 73% from the charity stripe. The Cardinals outrebounded the Bobcats, both offensively, 17-12, and defensively, 24-22.
Â
The Cards won the turnover battle as well, committing only 11 to the Bobcats' 17. Louisville found the open man often, assisting on 68% of made field goals today, ending the game with 23 total assists.
Â
"Coach Boals gave my team a great compliment when I talked to him after the game, and I agree with him," continued Kelsey. "He said you have a very, very, very unselfish team. I would agree with that. We give up good for great. Guys understand that we have great depth and cheer on their teammates. They support their teammates when they go into the game when they go out. It is fun as that is what our goal is: to have the No. 1 culture in the country. But you never arrive at that, it takes constant vigilance in everything you do, including the next practice when we get to the next team in the next day or so. We were fortunate to get a win. I am proud our guys. I am excited about the opportunity to go up to Cincinnati to play against Coach (Wes) Miller and the Bearcats. It will be a big-time non-conference game."

The Cardinals will be going on the road to play in The Hoops Classic against the Cincinnati Bearcats at the Heritage Bank Center in Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday, November 21 at 6:30 p.m. ET airing on ESPNU.
