Louisville outscored Colorado 19-10 in the final quarter
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 22/21 Louisville women's basketball team (2-1) used another strong fourth quarter to come away with a 74-68 win over Colorado (1-1) Wednesday night at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cards held the Buffaloes scoreless for over five minutes in the final frame to take the lead and did not look back.
Junior Skylar Jones had a season-best 21 points and tied a career high with five steals off the bench. It was her fourth career 20-plus point game and the 11th time she has led the team in scoring.
Senior Laura Ziegler joined Jones in double figures with 15 points, her second double figure scoring game of the season. She tied for the team lead with six rebounds and has led the team in rebounds in all three games this season. Tajianna Roberts scored in double figures for the second-straight game with 16 points against the Buffaloes.
Colorado got off to a hot start and had a stretch of six-straight made shots to build the lead up to 11. Louisville responded with an 8-0 run, capped off by a Mackenly Randolph lay-up which forced the Buffaloes to call a timeout. At the end of the first quarter, Louisville trailed 23-18.
Louisville scored the first six points to get the lead back over the first two minutes of the second quarter. Colorado answered with six-straight points of its own and had a five-point advantage at the media timeout in the quarter. Roberts hit a three as time was expiring to bring the Cardinals deficit to 37-34 going into the half.
The Cardinals came out of the half shooting well from the floor, hitting five of their first six shots of the half. That jump started a 7-0 run that put them back in front, 45-44, heading into the media timeout. That extended to a 10-0 run after a three from Roberts coming out of the timeout. Both teams scored 21 points in the third and the Cardinals trailed 58-55 heading into the fourth.
Points were hard to come by in the fourth quarter as both teams faced droughts of over three minutes each without scoring a point. Colorado was held scoreless for over five minutes as the Cardinals put together a 6-0 run. Roberts put the Cards back in front with a driving layup with 4:28 left in the game and the Cards never relinquished the lead after that point. The Cards were 10-for-14 free throw line in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals head out on the road to kick start conference play this weekend. Louisville heads south to Clemson to take on the Tigers in a Sunday matinee. The Cardinals and Tigers will square off at 3 p.m. ET and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
