
Cards Have Two Players Advance on Day One of ITA Regionals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Newcomers Matei Onofrei and Louis Chusseau each took home two wins in the qualifying round as the University of Louisville wraps up day one of competition at ITA Ohio Valley Regionals.
Sophomore Matei Onofrei competed in the morning slot for the Cards, and quickly took down Romeo Navarro of Eastern Kentucky in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-3.Â
France-native Louis Chusseau followed suit and rallied back from a first set deficit to defeat Butler's Nicholas Balthazor, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 in an intense battle.Â
Junior Russell Lokko competed in a lengthy match against Matteo Antonescu of Indiana, but ultimately fell 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 10-2.Â
Heading into the second round of the day, Onofrei posted a dominant match tiebreak and took down Tennessee Tech's Oliver Dao 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-1.Â
Chusseau's match also took three sets to win, but the sophomore was able to come out on top over Belmont's Austin Yack by a score of 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-6.Â
Later in the day, Lokko pulled off a redeeming victory in the consolation bracket, defeating Belmont's Eli Mizerski in dominant fashion, 6-1, 6-0.
Louisville looks ahead to day two of the competition for more singles action and the beginning of doubles play. All six players will participate in both slates over the weekend.Â
