LOUISVILLE, Ky.,-Â The University of Louisville football program faces its biggest challenge to date when the Cardinals travel to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami to face No. 2 Miami on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Â
After dropping their first game of the season, a 30-27 overtime defeat to nationally ranked Virginia, the Cardinals are coming off their second bye of the season, attempting to get back in the win column against one of the contenders for the national title.
Â
"On offense we have to clean a lot of things up, we want to make sure we are not giving the other team points. So, you can't make silly turnover and silly mistakes, which we had" Brohm said.
Â
The Cards now shift focus on the game against fellow Atlantic Coast Conference mate, the No. 2 ranked Miami Hurricanes. A potential victory against Miami provides a golden opportunity for Louisville to get back on track. Miami will be the highest ranked team UofL has played in the Brohm era, a ranking that would scare many, but not Brohm.Â
Â
While head man at Purdue, Brohm led upsets against No. 2 Ohio State in 2018, and another pair of upsets in 2021, against No. 2 Iowa and No. 3 Michigan State. In his first two seasons as head coach of the Cards, he has produced upsets of No.10 Notre Dame in 2023, and No. 11 Clemson in 2024. The game plan for knocking off top ranked opponents has proven successful in the past for Brohm.
Â
"There has to be some type of aggressive approach on all three segments and that plan has to work. At the same time, you can't beat yourself."
Â
Louisville will visit a Miami team that is rolling. The Hurricanes are 5-0, with three ranked wins already on the young season, including a 27-24 victory over last year's runner up, Notre Dame.Â
Â
"Excited about the opportunity we have, to be able to go down to Miami and play a really good football team. I think Miami is as talented as any team in the country" Brohm commented.
Â
The Hurricanes are led on offense by redshirt senior quarterback Carson Beck. The transfer quarterback is in his first season at Miami. "He's an [NFL] quarterback, he is big, he is tall, he can make all the throws and he has played a lot of football." Brohm would say when talking about Beck.
Â
Miami's defense, regarded as one of the best in the country, will provide a pivotal challenge for the Cards. The Hurricanes defensive line room, highlighted by the duo of Reuben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, who have a combined eight TFL's and 5.5 sacks, between the pair.
Â
"It shows up on tape, they have two defensive ends that are really talented, fast and strong. As well as some big guys up front and fast linebackers. This will be a huge test."  "They're (Louisville's offensive line) going to have to man up and do their part."
Â
Brohm looks forward to seeing improvement from his team in this game, while also getting a chance for them to put together a clean and complete game against a strong opponent.
Â
"I'd like to go play some good football, and I think we have a great opportunity against a great team, to show what we are made of."
Â
The key to victory for the Cards, according to Brohm, is all about taking control.
Â
"They've (Miami) had the lead in pretty much every game and they've been in control, and we have to do that ourselves if we want to win."
Â
Louisville visits Miami on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Hard Rock Stadium and the game will be televised on ESPN.
