LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's golf team is set to begin the 2024-25 season this weekend just down I-64 at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational. Hosted by Kentucky at the Champions Trace Golf Course in Nicholasville, the three-day tournament kicks off on Sunday and will have 11 teams participating.
All seven golfers will compete for the Cardinals this weekend as they return four players from the 2023-24 season in Carmen Griffiths, Millie Cottrell, Gabbi Bentancourt and Beatriz Barrios. Of the newcomers, one is a college transfer in Thienna Huynh and two are freshmen in Veronika Exposito and Bailey Burkett.
Griffiths had another strong season for the Cardinals last season. Griffiths led the Cardinals with two Top-10 finishes and five Top-20 finishes along with six rounds in the 60's. She was second on the squad with 14 rounds at par or better and she was one of two players to be selected as individuals to the NCAA Regionals in East Lansing. It was the second-straight season Griffiths advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
Barrios competed in her first season with the Cardinals last year after transferring in from Chattanooga. She played in nine tournaments last season and tallied two Top-20 finishes. Her best finish came at the Collegiate Invitational, where she finished in a tie for 16th.
Bentancourt played in seven tournaments last season with the Cards, including the final two rounds of the ACC Championship. Her best finish of the season came at The Ally, where she had a team-best finish of tied for 13th. Cottrell made her collegiate debut with the Cardinals and competed in five tournaments.
Huynh comes to the Cardinals after spending the last two seasons at UNLV. She was named second team All-Mountain West after her sophomore season. She had a career year on the course with a 72.84 scoring average and also reached a new career high with two top-10 finishes. She was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year after the 2022-23 season.
Esposito joins the Cardinals from The Woodlands, Texas. She was ranked 61st on the junior golf scoreboard rankings for the class of 2024 and qualified for the 73rd and 74th US Girls Junior Championship. Burkett comes to the Cards from Kansas City, Missouri. She was a two-time Missouri Junior Amateur Champion in 2023 and 2021 and also won the St. Louis Junior Invitational Championship in 2023.
