Louisville defeated in-city foe Bellarmine 3-1 on Monday night.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 15th-ranked University of Louisville soccer team notched a 3-1 victory over in-city foe Bellarmine on Monday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (3-0-0) got a first half goal from Sander Roed, and second half tallies from Jack Lewis and Ethan Subachan on its way to a third straight win to start the fall.
Harvey Sellers stayed perfect in goal, stopping two of three on-target shots for his third win.
Possession in the opening half was dominated by the Cardinals on Monday night, but Louisville found the net just once in the first 45 minutes.
In the 23rd minute, Lewis found Gage Guerra in the box who played it on the ground to Roed just outside the 18. The senior then blasted a right footed shot into the back of the net for his second goal in as many matches.
Despite the Cardinals outshooting the Knights 10-2 over the first half, UofL took only a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half saw more of the same, with the Cardinals controlling much of the possession but being kept out of the net.
Bellarmine (1-2-0) found the equalizer in the 64th minute, scoring off a long throw from the right sideline to level the match at one.
The contest didn't stay tied for long, however. Less than two minutes later, Lewis gave the Cards the lead back. TJ Kahoalii crossed the ball into the box for Chase Vazquez, who laid it off to Lewis at the top of the box. The freshman one-timed a left footed shot inside the right post for his first collegiate tally.
In the waning minutes of the match, Subachan put the finishing touches on things. Leon Kondic dribbled in from the left side, drawing the keeper away from the goal. His cross then found the foot of Subachan who easily put the ball into the open net for Louisville's third goal of the night.
For the 90 minutes, Louisville outshot Bellarmine 20-7 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Louisville will now head into its first conference match of the season on Friday night. The Cardinals will take on Notre Dame, last season's national runner-up, with kick scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
