September 06, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Louisville suffered its first loss of the season on Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 15th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night, losing 2-1 to Notre Dame at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (3-1-0, 0-1-0 ACC) fell behind 2-1 midway through the opening half and could not find the equalizer, despite outshooting the Irish 15-10 on the night.
All three goals came early on Friday night.
Notre Dame (1-0-2, 1-0-0) found the back of the net less than seven minutes into the match, the first time this season the Cardinals were not the first on the scoreboard.
Louisville's answer came just over seven minutes later with Ethan Subachan taking a pass from JP Jordan and burying a left-footed chance from in close to tie the match at one.
The Irish jumped back in front in the 29th minute on a shot from outside the box that found the top right corner.
Notre Dame ended up with a breakaway chance minutes later, but Harvey Sellers was up to the task. The sophomore deflected the shot attempt away from the net to keep the match at 2-1.
The Cardinals were on the attack throughout the second half, searching for the tying goal.
Louisville fired nine shots at the goal over the final 45 minutes, the most dangerous of which came in the 80th minute.
Gage Guerra outpaced a defender down the right flank and played a low cross right in front of goal. Sander Roed got on the end of it, however his shot attempt hit the underside of the crossbar and stayed out.
The Cardinals forced a pair of saves in the final 20 minutes as well but were unable to level the match.
Louisville will now have a quick turnaround to get ready for Monday's Battle of the Bluegrass match at Kentucky. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET in Lexington.
