April 12, 2024 | Track & Field
Brion Stephens led the charge with a runner-up finish in the men’s high jump at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The University of Louisville track & field teams completed their second day of competition in California on Friday with athletes splitting between the Bryan Clay Invitational and Beach Invitational.
Brion Stephens led the charge, finishing as the runner-up in the men's high jump at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a final clearance of 2.19m (7-2.25) after automatically qualifying for this summer's USA Olympic Trials in the event at the Texas Relays two weeks ago.
Lucy Fellows completed her first collegiate heptathlon, finishing fourth in her section with a final score of 5,274 points to jump up to second on the Louisville all-time board. The freshman recorded a trio of personal-bests over the course of the seven events, setting high marks in the 110m hurdles, high jump, and javelin throw.
The Cardinals also saw Dominic Lowe leap into the program's top-ten in his debut at the men's decathlon, totaling 5,720 points.
On the track at Bryan Clay, Maddie Seaby made her collegiate outdoor debut, finishing the women's 5000m in 16:35.43, leaping up to seventh in the Louisville record books. Ellie Maurer also recorded a personal-best in the event with a time of 17:04.39, dropping nearly 90 seconds off her outdoor-best a season ago.
Ryan Farrell narrowly missed out on a personal-best of his own in the men's 800 while clocking a time of 1:49.99, the third time breaking the 1:50 barrier in his outdoor career.
Sophia Day closed out the day with her second personal-best of the weekend at the Beach Invitational, recording a mark of 5.78m (18-11.75) in the women's long jump after setting a freshman record in the women's triple jump last night.
The Cardinals are slated to wrap up their split weekend tomorrow with both the Bryan Clay Invitational and Beach Invitational set to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET.
