No. 22 Cardinals Host No. 11 Oklahoma for SEC/ACC Challenge
December 03, 2024 | Women's Basketball
This is the third ranked opponent the Cardinals will face over the first eight games of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 22 Louisville women's basketball team (5-2) returns home for the first time in nearly two weeks for the SEC/ACC Challenge as they take on No. 11 Oklahoma (6-1) Wednesday night from the KFC Yum! Center. This is the second year of the SEC/ACC Challenge and the first time the Cardinals will be able to host after traveling to Ole Miss last season. The Cardinals and Sooners are set to face off at 5 p.m. ET and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
Wednesday's matchup begins a tough week for the Cardinals as they are set to face two ranked opponents. After the game against No. 11 Oklahoma, Louisville will travel to Brooklyn to take on No. 2 UConn in the Women's Champions Classic. The Sooners and Huskies are the third and fourth ranked opponents the Cards will have faced in the non-conference portion of their schedule. It is the first time since the 2016-17 season that Louisville will face two-straight Top 15 opponents in the same week during the non-conference slate. In 2016-17, the Cardinals faced No. 3 South Carolina at a neutral venue and hosted No. 5 Maryland in the same week.
Louisville is coming off a hard-fought 79-71 win at Colorado this past Saturday. The game against the Buffaloes was the third road game and fifth game away from home so far this season. Both numbers are tied for the ACC lead through the first four weeks of the regular season.
The Cardinals trailed by one early in the fourth quarter until Tajianna Roberts went on a 5-0 run by herself to regain the lead and force Colorado to call a timeout. The run continued for the Cardinals as they ripped off a 16-0 run to take control of the game. Louisville had four players score in double figures with Nyla Harris and Jayda Curry both scoring 14 points each. Izela Arenas tallied a season-high 11 points after playing 27 minutes and Roberts added 13 points, her sixth double-digit scoring game this season. Roberts was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season following her performance against the Buffaloes.

Series History - This will be the third all-time meeting between the two schools with the Cardinals holding a 2-0 all-time advantage. This will be the first meeting between the two schools in Louisville as the first two meetings were at a neutral site and then in Norman. The first meeting came on the sports biggest stage as the Cardinals and Sooners met in St. Louis in the Final Four during the 2008-09 season. The Cardinals overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to advance to the program's first national championship game. Louisville was led by all-time great Angel McCoughtry, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Candyce Bingham added 14 points and four assists for the Cards as they advanced to the national championship game.
Last Meeting (Nov. 17, 2013) - Making it to the Final Four last year, No. 5 Louisville learned one important lesson. No matter the situation, nothing is impossible. So when they found themselves down by 15 points to No. 11 Oklahoma, the Cardinals didn't panic. They just kept on playing Louisville basketball. That was enough for them to storm back and earn a hard fought 97-92 overtime win over the Sooners on Sunday in the Preseason WNIT Championship game. Tia Gibbs scored 23 points and had nine rebounds to lead Louisville. Shoni Schimmel scored 16 points while Asia Taylor had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hammond, the tournament MVP, posted 13 points and seven rebounds.
