LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UofL men's basketball defeated crosstown foe Bellarmine 100-68 on Tuesday evening in the KFC Yum! Center.
"In terms of the game today, I want to acknowledge Scotty (Davenport) and Bellarmine," said Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey. "I have the utmost respect for the program that Scotty has built. He is known in coaching circles as a kind of innovator, a savant if you will. They play a unique style that is their own brand. It is difficult to prepare for as they do a ton of movement an a ton of cutting. I just have a lot of respect for them… They were short-handed tonight without their leading scorer."
"I loved how our players responded from a really tough loss at home nine days ago. You always like to get back up on the horse after tough loss like that. And to have to stew over it for nine days, I thought our guys approached the game the right way. We had great film sessions, terrific practices and came out and played really well tonight."
The game between the two teams started tight, no team straying more than six points from each other for the first 10 minutes. From that point on, Louisville used a 23-4 run to pull away from the Knights and take a 45-23 lead with just over two minutes to go in the half.
Louisville led 48-27 at halftime break.
Bellarmine tried to fight back in the second half, scoring 11 unanswered points between 14:25 and 11:26 to cut the Cardinals' lead to just 61-46. The run included three straight 3-pointers from Ben Johnson who ended the night with a total of 29 points.
Louisville slowly grew its advantage over the next seven minutes and put the game away for good with a 7-0 run between 2:03 and 1:24.
The Cardinals outrebounded the Knights 37-23 and scored 17 second chance points off their 10 offensive rebounds.
There were five Cardinals in double figure scoring: Terrence Edwards Jr. (26), Kasean Pryor (21), Chucky Hepburn (16), James Scott (10) and J'Vonne Hadley (10). Scott and Pryor added on eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Bellarmine was led in scoring by Johnson's 29 points.
Louisville will get right back in to action with Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Friday night in the KFC Yum! Center. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
