Nate Kurisky Steps Up in Cardinals' Win vs. Boston College
October 31, 2024 | Football
Louisville, Ky. – University of Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm consistently talks about the "next man up" philosophy, and that was evident in Louisville's 31-27 win over Boston College on Friday night.
Playing in a larger role after tight end Jamari Johnson was ruled out for the season after Louisville's loss to Miami, Nate Kurisky showed he was ready as he scored two touchdowns to aid in the Cardinals' comeback win.
Kurisky, a redshirt sophomore, played in 14 games in 2023, bringing in 18 catches for 141 yards with two touchdowns. Prior to his two touchdown catches in the win at Boston College, Kurisky had two catches on the season.
"The two touchdowns are just next man up mentality. I got the chance to play more last game and go make plays when my number was called," Kurisky said.
Kurisky saw a season high in both snaps and receptions in Friday's game.
"I went in there and played the most snaps I've played all year and had two catches. Knowing what I can do, I had to go out there and do it during the game," Kurisky stated. "For the rest of the season, with Jamari being out, hopefully I can step up and play more to get more catches."
Kurisky noted that he had familiarity with the play call that brought him the two touchdown receptions in the game on Friday, dating back to last season.
"They were the same play call. I thought they would cover it, but I was more open the first time than the second time. Last year, the two touchdowns I scored were off the same play as well, so I'm used to that play."
Head coach Jeff Brohm knows that the team will need to lean more on Kurisky with injuries to the tight end position. Brohm knows that given Kurisky's experience last year, he will be able to step up when his number is called.
"Last year we did not have a lot of experience at tight end and he [Nate Kurisky] played hard," Brohm said. "He is a guy that can do a lot of things for us. He doesn't have very many mental mistakes because he understands [football]. We've got to rely more on him, and I think he will continue to do a good job for us."
Kurisky and the offense will look to face their latest test on the road at Clemson on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm ET on ESPN.
