Cardinals Battle Top Talent at Malibu Showdown

Will Mayew defeats No. 31 Gavin Young in singles; Every freshman wins a match
MALIBU, Calif. – Louisville Men's Tennis kicked off its fall season with the Malibu Showdown, taking on three NCAA Tournament teams from 2023. Sophomore Will Mayew led the way for the Cardinals, earning singles wins over Kentucky's Clement Christophe and No. 31 Gavin Young of Michigan.
Louisville traveled all five of its freshmen to the Golden State, and each player got a singles win in their collegiate debut.
On the opening day of the fall season, Louisville played in-state foe Kentucky. Mayew won his match in three sets while Lexington native, freshman Evan Duggal won his in straight sets. Mayew teamed up with junior Natan Rodridgues to defeat Kentucky's top doubles pair 6-3.
On Saturday, the Cardinals faced Michigan, who made in an appearance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in the spring. Louisville picked up three singles wins over the Wolverines. After falling in his first set against ranked-Young, Mayew made a comeback to win the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Miguel Avendaño logged his first collegiate win in straight sets while fellow freshman Kosuke Nakanishi took his debut match in three, winning the third set tiebreaker. Louisville had an additional singles win on Saturday as freshman Russell Lokko beat an individual from Pepperdine in three sets.
To wrap up the Malibu Showdown, the Cardinals at large took on Pepperdine in doubles and singles. Freshman Piet Steveker finished out the day by defeating the Waves' Photos Photiades in three sets. Nakinishi added a singles win to his total as his Pepperdine opponent retired.

Louisville will send Avendaño, Nakinishi, Duggal and Lokko to the Alabama Invitational September 29-October 1.
The Cardinals will have numerous players in the ITA Men's All-American Championships between September 29 and October 7, including Mayew, Rodrigues, Steinbach, Matthew Fung and Etienne Donnet.
